CHAPTER 33

Thursday night

JP parked a block from Terry’s apartment and walked toward Market Street, checking every nook and cranny in the Gaslamp Quarter. He questioned every homeless person and stopped in every bar, but found no sign of Xander or Angela. Up and down Sixth Avenue, he continued the search. He took E Street over to Fifth and was headed south when he spotted DuBois.

“What are you doing here?” JP asked.

“Same thing you are, looking for Xander and Angela. Any luck?”

“They seem to be as lost as last year’s Easter eggs.”

“That’s one way of putting it, McCloud.” DuBois gave a half smile. “I’m pretty certain they’re not around here. I’ve spoken to three officers who are searching as well. They did the same last night, and no one has seen Xander since Angela went missing.”

“You think they’re together?” JP asked as they walked. He noticed DuBois moved slower than usual.

“I guess maybe I want to assume that. It’s better than thinking the girl was abducted, even though I’m certain being with her mother is not safe either. At least not for very long. It would give us a better chance of finding her than if she’s with some stranger. But still, it’s not unusual for druggies to disappear for a few days, even a week at a time.”

“Should we call it a night?” JP asked. “You look exhausted.”

“You’re right, it’s time to leave. There’s plenty of officers looking for them, and they’ll let me know the minute they have information.” DuBois blinked. “Where’s your truck?”

“On Market near Seventeenth.”

“Geez, McCloud, you covered a lot of ground. Come on, I’m right around the corner. I’ll give you a ride back.”

They got in DuBois’ car and drove west. “You’re going home, right?” JP asked.

“I am, but I think I’ll stop at the Hay Bale and see if Porter Holloway happens to be there. It’s on the way. I only live a few miles from there.”

JP was tired too and wanted to go home, but said, “How about if I join you? I’ll take my truck and meet you there.”

“Sounds good. We can have a beer and unwind.”

They reached the spot where JP had parked. “I’m not sure I’d leave my truck in this area,” DuBois said. “You might not have tires. I’ll wait to make sure you can drive away.”

“Thanks.” JP walked around the truck, found nothing amiss, then got in and started the engine. He rolled down his window. “I think we’re good. See you at the roadhouse.”
